Genesis Chapter 15 records the Lord’s covenant with Abram and the promise of an heir.
The word of the Lord comes to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” Abram questions how he can have an heir when he remains childless. The Lord brings him outside and says, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars… So shall your offspring be.” Abram believes the Lord, and He counts it to him as righteousness. The Lord then makes a covenant, directing Abram to bring animals which are cut in two. A smoking fire pot and a flaming torch pass between the pieces. The Lord promises the land from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates, and tells of the 400 years his descendants will be afflicted in a land not their own.
